Upheaval by Jared Diamond – Book Review

June 3, 2022June 7, 2024yggdrasille

The Exorcist – Film Review

May 19, 2022June 7, 2024yggdrasille
By today’s desensitised standards, this horror classic – often cited as the Scariest Movie of All Time – is kinda dated, kinda slow and not that terribly scary. But its most notorious scenes and moments still have a power to disturb.

Petite Maman – Film Review

May 17, 2022June 7, 2024yggdrasille
In this era of overlong and overstuffed movies, it’s nice to see a very simple story told well in under two hours, like this tender, sensitive and gentle modern fairytale from the French filmmaker Céline Sciamma.

The Seven Dials Mystery by Agatha Christie – Book Review

May 12, 2022June 7, 2024yggdrasille
A sorta-sequel to The Secret of Chimneys, this high-spirited thriller is equally enjoyable, and showcases Dame Agatha’s criminally underrated sense of humour.

Kasey Chambers @ Palais Theatre

May 6, 2022June 7, 2024yggdrasille
Another concert that got delayed and delayed and delayed yet again finally happened! Great show with something old, something newer, and a country cover of Eminem I never knew I wanted.

New Music 04/2022 – Arlo Parks, Bicep, The Weather Station

May 3, 2022August 11, 2025yggdrasille
A thoroughly charming neo-soul debut; an electronic album by a Northern Irish DJ duo; a quietly beautiful record about grief and climate change.

Death Comes As the End by Agatha Christie – Book Review

April 21, 2022June 10, 2024yggdrasille
And now for something different from the Queen of Crime – a murder mystery set on the bank of the Nile, in Ancient Egypt circa 2000 BC.

The Worst Person in the World – Film Review

April 19, 2022June 10, 2024yggdrasille
I really enjoyed this peculiar, freewheeling Norwegian dark comedy-drama about a young woman battling indecisiveness as she approaches 30s, despite some problems with the writing that made it feel a tad shallow.

Amadou & Mariam @ Elisabeth Murdoch Hall

April 15, 2022June 10, 2024yggdrasille
I kicked off the Easter long weekend with this lively and funky show by the husband-wife duo from Mali. I love our homegrown talent but it’s great to finally see an international act after nearly two years!

Martha Marlow @ Elisabeth Murdoch Hall

April 13, 2022June 10, 2024yggdrasille
I had a very lovely evening at the Melbourne Recital Centre, listening to one of my favourite records from last year played live with a 17-piece chamber orchestra.
