New Music 02/2022 – Julia Stone, Baker Boy, Martha Marlow
Tag: pop
I picked up some great releases by the Australian artists after working through Double J’s Best of 2021 list, including a couple of impressive debuts and an intriguing musical re-invention.
New Music 01/2022 – Billie Eilish, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Peaches
Excellent sophomore album about the dangers and costs of fame; beautiful meditation on grief and loss; the Queen of Electro Smut.
New Music 10/2021 – Laura Mvula, St. Vincent
I found that while I still had enthusiasm for reading new books and watching new films and TV series in lockdown, when it came to music my overwhelming mood was to shut down, listen to the music I already loved, and not make much effort to get into something new. I did however make an exception for a couple of my favourite ladies, both making interesting pivots from their previous work.
New Music 04/2021 – Lana Del Rey, Dead Can Dance, Triple J’s Hottest 100 Volume 28
Lana Del Rey finally makes a great album; a catch up with the latest from my favourite otherworldly duo; a musical snapshot of the year 2020 according to Triple J.
New Music 12/2020 – A-WA, Grimes, Sufjan Stevens
Another musical trio of Haim sisters (from Israel rather than Los Angeles); a concept album about the goddess of climate crisis; brilliant electronic re-invention.
New Music 10/2020 – Lykke Li, Michael Kiwanuka, SOAK
Sad songs from a Scandi songstress that you can dance to; brilliant third album from the UK soul man; a grim title for the not-so-grim music.
New Music 08/2020 – Dead Can Dance, Aurora
Playing catch-up with a long-time musical love and my new favourite Norwegian singer-songwriter.
New Music 03/2020 – Weyes Blood, FKA twigs
Sumptuous vintage-flavoured loveliness; no sophomore slump from the queen of experimental pop.
New Music 10/2019 – Sleater-Kinney, Billie Eilish, Gillian Welch
The best kind of surprise from my long-time faves; I finally jump on the Billie Eilish hype train (and enjoy the ride); more of the warm and lovely folk-country.
